History

The historical name of the archipelago - Apsyrtides - is connected with the legend of the hero myth Apsyrt, whom his sister Medea has killed. Parts of his body they threw into the sea and the result was the Apsyrtides archipelago.

The oldest settlements on the islands (Lubenice, Osor, Beli) have more than 4000 years of history and the Roman town of Cres was bishop in the 9th century.

Almost uninhabited until the mid of the 13th century, Losinj frameworks developed in the 19th century into one of the leading regional maritime powers and the town of Mali Losinj was the second most important port of Trieste on the Adriatic coast.

The sailors from Losinj were considered the best in the Mediterranean Sea. Just at this time, the architecture of the center of Mali Losinj has been determined, which has remained unchanged to this day.

The first hotel was built in 1887 and named after the ancient Roman name for the city of Vienna, Vindobona.

Due to the mild climate of Losinj was appointed in 1892 by a decision of the Ministry of Health of the Austro-Hungarian Empire as a health resort. Because of that Losinj became one of the most popular holiday destination for the Austro-Hungarian aristocracy.

They have built the numerous villas and summer houses on the island which can be admired still today.
