The
present appearance
of the Kvarner
islands
can be explained by
the increase of the
Adriatic Sea (100 m)
at the end
of the
last ice age. All the Kvarner teritory,
including
Northern Dalmatia
and
the
Adriatic
coast was flooded by the
water
masses
of
melting
icebergs.
Mountains
and hills became islands, and the rest
was
drowned
in the sea
and created underwater
reefs
and rocks.
The islands of Cres and Lošinj are part of an island group in the Kvarner Bay.
In Osor a swing bridge connects Cres, the largest Croatian island (length 68 km, width 13 km) to the island of Lošinj. The island group of Lošinj encompasses the island of Lošinj (74.68 km²) as well as the smaller islands of Unije, Ilovik, Susak, Srakane and other uninhabited islands.
